Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
RATING: 5 Stars
GENRE: YA Contemporary
Cath is a Simon Snow fan.
Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan...
But for Cath, being a fan is her life—and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.
Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere. Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.
Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words... And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.
For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories? And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?
MY THOUGHTS:
Yes Yes Yes!!!! Finally, a book that follows the story of nearly every YA readers life (minus Levi of course)! If you, like me, am a fangirl, for whatever or whomever, this book is for you! Cath shares our love for that something special in our life and Levi is our dream man!
Number one on the list of fantastic things is the setting - college. As a British girl, I love the idea of US College; the team spirit, shared dorms and variety of subjects taught. So, reading about this dream makes it seem like I'm already living it.
The characters were lovable, relatable and sincere. Every single character had a distinct role to play and it didn't feel like they all merged into one. Cath was sop close to my heart from her college worries to her quirky habits and it made this book really personal. Also - I really loved Levi!!! The only thing I would like to see more of is the relationship between Cath and Wren as I felt at times the whole twin thing let slip.
From all this I bet you're thinking of this as a cheesy rom-com, and although there is a beautiful romance and some LOL moments, there are more serious issues than this. Loneliness, fitting in and even alcohol abuse make the book even better by adding that extra emotional dimension.
A definite must read for everyone!
Hahahaha, it is so awesome to see you fangirling over fangirl. I think it is really neat that a book was finally written for heavy readers ABOUT a heavy reader XD
