Use your Library!
This is probably the most obvious one but I think is the most useful! Libraries often have new release books as well as a wealth of other ones. I think libraries are best for those books you want to read but are not too sure if you will like them as it saves you buying them.
Overdrive is an online website and an app which is know internationally. It allows you to find your local library and borrow eBooks and Audiobooks for free! I have recently signed up for this with my library and have borrowed a few eBooks and an audiobook which has been downloaded to my tablet. The great thing is ; you don't have to worry about overdue charges as it automatically removes from your device after the loan period! If it's magazines you want to read for free, you can also access them through Zinio and your library.
If you are a fangirl or fanboy you will definitely know about this. Wattpad is a platform where people can write and publish their own stories that you can read for free. There is a lot of fanfiction but there is also other novels and some great authors have been published after being discovered on here.
Again, similar to Wattpad, Movellas allows you to find stories other people have written and read them for free. Movellas also hosts regular writing competitions with some fantastic prizes!
There are so many brilliant books out on Amazon which can be read for free! Once of my favourite series - The Dancing Dreams trilogy by Leslie Dubois, I picked up because the first book was free. Have a browse on the freebies section and you are bound to find something good! If you want an insight on what books are free, check out my regular Kindle Freebie posts. There are also several Goodreads groups dedicated to promoting Kindle Freebies.
A great way to get some physical books for free is to enter giveaways. These can be found on most blogs and are also a great to discover new authors and bloggers. Again, you can find giveaway promotions on Goodreads as well as their giveaway section.
Got books you don't want anymore and ones you are dying to read? Try swapping them! You can swap with friends or relatives with no charges. There are some websites and Goodreads groups dedicated to it but you may have to pay a small charge for postage. Plus, you can spread the joy of a book you have loved!
