Where do you write?
Anywhere. I have a nice home office but I also like to get out and write.
Did you want to be an author when you were younger?
Yes. That is all I ever wanted.
What inspired you to write?
Life. "There's Treasure Everywhere", to quote Calvin and Hobbes.
How did you feel when you saw your book in a shop for the first time?
Like I had just run 3 consecutive marathons, crossed a finish line, and was looking forward to beginning the next one
What/who inspires you to write?
Any creative person who has made the attempt to make their way in the world by accessing and utilizing their creativity is inspiring to me. I love reading, watching or listening to the story of someone's path to public self-expression in the arts.
If you could have dinner with anyone in the world who would it be?
Living? Morrissey or Douglas Coupland.
Do you think Book covers are important or should you never judge a book by it's cover?
Book covers are tremendously important. You can't judge a book entirely by the cover, but you can judge the amount of care a publisher has for a book by the cover. My covers have been uniformly fantastic.
Books or ebooks?
I like 'em all.
How long does it take you to write a book?
It varies. Usually six months to a year.
Any tips for people who want to be an author?
Have fun, relax. Understand that not all criticism is good or even well-intentioned.
What is your favourite book?
I have so many. Infinite Jest and all of the Salinger books are always high on the list.
What is your favourite thing about being an author?
Being read!
Are there any new books in the pipeline?
Always
Are there any alternative endings you considered for any of your books?
Not really...the end is usually the first thing I figure out.
Why do you write teenage books in particular?
I don't know, really. Those years are super-charged emotionally, which adds to the personal fun, for me, in writing about them
